FITTRIPPER 2019/ 2021

FitTripper

Fitness-focused travelers had no way to find and book gyms abroad without leaving the app. I redesigned FitTripper from 0 to 1 — turning a fragmented gym search experience into a map-first discovery and booking platform.

Background

Travelers who wanted to stay consistent with their fitness routine abroad faced a real gap: no app understood the combination of location-awareness, short-term booking, and gym discovery across cities. FitTripper users were piecing together searches across Google Maps, individual gym websites, and email inquiries — a process that broke down the moment they landed somewhere new.

The obvious move would have been to build a gym directory — a searchable list of locations with contact info. The problem: a directory doesn't solve discovery. When you're in Tokyo or Lisbon, you don't know which neighborhood to search. You need to see what's nearby and decide from there. A list-first approach would have put the cognitive burden back on the user.

Instead, we anchored the entire experience in a map — letting geography be the starting point rather than a filter applied after the fact.

While FitTripper does not have a direct competitor, I conducted a visual competitive analysis on other popular fitness apps to better understand the different trends that exist within the fitness industry. The competitors that I analyzed were Classpass, Wannatrain, Mindbody, and C25K. From these competitors I came away with a set of key takeaways and design principles.

While the main goals of the competitor apps were different from FitTripper, there were many features that both apps offered. Features such as scheduling, favorites, category lists, ratings, and location were found across FitTripper and all competitors. All competitors utilized strong visual hierarchy with an emphasis on cards to display information. The quality use of whitespace varied, as some competitors had information overload due to the lack of whitespace. Lastly no competitors utilized a map screen to find gyms, which would be a key feature of FitTripper.

Approach

The central design decision was making the map the home screen, not a secondary feature. Interactive location pins let users scan an unfamiliar city visually, with cards surfacing key details — name, rating, hours, price — tied to each pin. Swiping cards updated the map in real time, creating a two-way feedback loop between the list and the location. A toggle let users shift to list view when they preferred it.

For the gym profile, the challenge was presenting enough information to build confidence without overwhelming the user. I implemented swipeable images at the top — borrowing a pattern from Google Maps — followed by tabbed navigation for reviews, photos, and recommendations. Pricing, class schedules, and amenities were all surfaced at the profile level so users could make a booking decision without digging.

The Gym Profile View was designed to give users a clear and comprehensive understanding of what each location offered, helping them choose the best option for their fitness needs. I implemented swipeable images at the top—similar to Google Maps—to provide a visual feel for the space, along with prominently displayed contact information for quick access. A horizontal tab scroll allowed users to easily navigate between an overview, user reviews, photos, and personalized recommendations. The profile also included a detailed list of pricing options, a weekly schedule of classes or activities, and a full breakdown of available amenities, ensuring users had all the information they needed to make an informed decision.
